About Us
This rheumatology practice had been located in the Crossroads Medical Building in Ellicott City, MD from 1991 and then moved to StevensForest Green in Columbia, Md in August, 2018. Over these 33 years, we have registered over 100,000 patients, referred by primary care physicians and most other specialties from the greater Baltimore and central Maryland region although it is not uncommon to see patients from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Washington, DC, Delaware and points further.
Our team is highly skilled and experienced. We greatly value the long term, ongoing relationships that we have with our patients. It is our mission to provide the highest quality care compassionately and with attention to the unique needs of our patients who have chronic rheumatologic diseases. | |
| | Melissa Hawkins-Holt, MD (adult & pediatric rheumatology) graduated from University of Maryland Medical School where she also completed her Med-Peds Residency and Rheumatology Fellowship. She is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Rheumatology. In addition to her adult and pediatric rheumatology practice here starting in 2003, she had been the head of Pediatric Rheumatology at University of Maryland from 2014 through 2023. |
| Thomas J. Lang, MD, PhD (adult rheumatology) graduated from University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. Dr Lang was Professor of Medicine in UMMS Department of Rheumatology for 7 years where he was also the Chief of the Arthritis Clinic, Baltimore VA Medical Center and Director of Clinical Education at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He joined this practice in 2005. Dr. Lang has regularly participated in several clinical research trials providing access to cutting edge therapies if deemed appropriate for our patients. He is also providing inpatient rheumatology consultations for Howard County General Hospital. | |
| | Moe T. Zan, MD (adult rheumatology) completed her Internal Medicine residency in Danbury, Conn. and comleted her Rheumatology fellowship at Dartmouth in 2010. She has been board certified in Internal Medicine and has maintained board certification in Adult Rheumatology. She has previously practiced clinical rheumatology at Dartmouth and Johns Hopkins. She joined this practice in 2013. |
| Marlyn Lorenzo, MD (adult rheumatology) completed her Rheumatology fellowship in 2005,after her Internal Medicine residency at Cabrini Medical Center in New York City. She has been board certified in Internal Medicine and has maintained certification in adult rheumatology. She has been a staff rheumatologist at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore 2005 to 2015 and was the Chief of Rheumatology 2010 to 2015, before joining our group in early 2016. | |
| | Shabnam Ali, MD, MBBS. (adult rheumatology) completed her Rheumatology fellowship at Wayne State University (Detroit, MI)in 2013 after having already completed an Infectious disease fellowship at Louisiana State University (Shreveport, LA) in 2010. Dr. Ali is board certified in adult rheumatology. She had been practicing rheumatology in Charlotte, NC for 5 years, before joining our practice in April, 2019. |
| Arash Hassaantoufighi, MD, FACR (Dr Hassan, for short) grew up in Maryland, graduating from University of Maryland and University or West Virginia medical school. He completed internal medicine residancy in Texas and then rheumatology fellowship at Georgetown Hospital/Washington Hospital Center. He is board certified in adult rheumatology. He started rheumatology practice at Langley Air Force Base, then Hampton, Virginia for 3 years before returning back home to Maryland to join our group. Dr. Hassan started at ACS of MD in August, 2024. He will also be providing inpatient hospital consultations when necessary at Howard County Hospital. | |
| | Matthew Eremita, MD, FAAP grew up in Connecticut, completing medical school and pediatric residency at University of Connecticut School of Medicine and then completing pediatric rheumatology training at Zucker School of Medicine/Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New York. He is Board Certified in pediatrics and will be board certified in pediatric rheumatology. He has been seeing patients at ACS of MD since July 1, 2024. In addition to practicing outpatient pediatric rheumatology through our office, Dr. Eremita will also be providing pediatric rheumatology inpatient consultations at Sinai Children's Hospital in Baltimore.. |
| Alyssa Metzler Chin, PA- C -is a board certified Physician Assistant who joined our group in 2018 and is now very experienced in adult rheumatology. We appreciate her confidence and independence. She had previously worked for 2 years in a private Internal Medicine practice in Florida. She graduated from University of Maryland, College Park in 2012 and completed her Masters degree in Physician Assistant Studies in 2016 at NOVA Southeastern University in Florida. | |
| | Parvin Salari, PA-C -is a board certified Physician Assistant who is very experienced in rheumatology, having practiced rheumatology for 8 years before joining our group in 2023. She had a former career as a physician in Iran for 13 years. Her depth of knowledge, years of experience and genuine consideration for her patients are very evident. |
| Paul A. Gertler, MD No longer seeing patients.
(RETIRED adult rheumatology) had been practicing clinical rheumatology in Baltimore and Ellicott City for 33 years until his retirement in the end of 2018.
He had faithfully provided excellent care for his patients and had been instrumental in establishing this group as the premier rheumatology practice in Howard County. We are grateful for his dedication and hard work for over 3 decades.
